Peugeot returns to the US with a car-sharing service full of Chevrolets

Company plans to begin operations by the end of this month

The PSA Group, owner of the Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel and Vauxhall marques, will return to the US through a new car sharing venture, which will begin operations soon in Washington state.

The service will be available by the end of October, Brigitte Courtehouxm, executive vice president of mobility and connectivity at PSA Group, told Automotive News at the Paris motor show.

Known as Free2Move, the service will offer a fleet of 600 Chevrolet Cruze and Equinox models for short-term hire. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but it will likely be similar to other services, such as Zipcar.

In addition to renting out vehicles from its own fleet, Free2Move aggregates mobility services from other companies into one smartphone application. This allows users to sign up once for Free2Move and be registered across a variety of services, including other car-sharing providers.

What's available differs from city-to-city, with Parisian users able to access peer-to-peer and short-term car hire, as well as scooter and bike rentals.

In 1991 Peugeot stopped selling its cars in the US market.

The start of the car-sharing service is part of a 10-year plan in the US, which may eventually see the company return to selling vehicles using one of its many brands. The company has yet to declare which marque it will use, although Opel is responsible for engineering vehicles to suit American tastes and regulations.

The PSA Group bought Opel and Vauxhall from GM in 2017. It's understood under the rules of the takeover, the French company can't sell GM-engineered vehicles outside of Opel and Vauxhall's existing markets.
