2019 Mercedes-AMG A35 a near match for current A45 performance

Which means the new A45 will be something even more special.

While the Mercedes-AMG A35 had its public debut at the 2018 Paris motor show, it's the upcoming 2019 Mercedes-AMG A45 that has tails wagging.

Speaking with CarAdvice at the Paris motor show, Tobias Moers, the chairman of the management board of Mercedes-AMG said that it will be more powerful than ever with an all-new engine.

"The 35, to be honest, is a shared engine with Mercedes. This is the base power output of what we can get out of the Mercedes engine, but everything was done in house with it regarding calibration and the layout of the turbocharger, the dimension of the turbocharger and things like that."

"The 45 engine is going to be a totally new, reengineered engine at AMG. You can expect at least 400 horses [over 300kW of power]."

As Moers notes, the AMG A35 will use an engine supplied by Mercedes-Benz and tuned by Mercedes-AMG, leaning on value and bang-for-buck.

And, while it doesn't feature a full-fruit AMG setup, it will perform at similar levels to the current A45, which is good news for buyers that want performance without all the fanfare.

"The A35 family is not diluting the brand. We have shared components with the next 45. And driving-dynamics-wise, it's on the same level as the current A45, but with less horsepower. But it's a different segment and we're going to be really competitive with pricing," Moers said.

While pricing and specification is yet to be locked in for Australia, we understand the A35 it will be an affordable hot hatch option that will be priced between the new A250 and the current A45. It's expected to arrive in Australia during early 2019.

Do you think the A35 dilutes the AMG brand? Do you see it as a good bridging point between the A250 and A45?
