2019 Peugeot 208 spied inside and out

New images show upcoming light hatch's digital cockpit and premium design.

The next-generation Peugeot 208 has been spied up close and personal this week, including new shots of the upcoming light car's cabin.

Scheduled for an anticipated reveal at the 2019 Geneva motor show next March, the 208 will sport an all-new design drawing upon the company's latest models – including the 508, 3008 and 5008 – for inspiration.

Like the larger 508, it appears the 208 will get diagonal LED daytime-running light strips integrated into the front bumper, along with a wider and flatter face for a more aggressive stance.

Out back we can see the three 'claw' LED tail-light signature becoming a trademark of Peugeot's current line-up, while the chunkier proportions lead us to believe the new 208 will offer improved passenger and luggage space compared to the current model.

For the first time we've got a peek of the new interior, too, which appears to take heavy inspiration from the 3008 and 5008 in terms of design and layout.

Peugeot's latest i-Cockpit design involves a small steering wheel sitting below the instrument panel – which also appears to be all digital in this vehicle – while the centre stack is angled toward the driver and topped by a floating tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system.

The toggle-like switchgear from the 3008 and 5008 also carries over, and there looks to be plenty of glossy piano black plastics.

We can't see much else in terms of the materials and trims used inside, but expect the new 208 to have an upmarket look and feel given its recent track record.

Under the skin, the new 208 will be the second model under the PSA Group banner to ride on the company's new CMP modular architecture, which already serves as the basis of the DS3 Crossback. Opel's next-generation Corsa light hatch – also due sometime next year – will be based on these underpinnings.

The CMP platform allows for alternative powertrain technology, meaning the next-gen 208 will almost certainly offer plug-in hybrid and all-electric power at some point – the DS3 Crossback launched with an all-electric E-Tense variant, while Opel has confirmed the next Corsa will be offered as an EV from 2020.

Earlier this year Britain's Auto Express reported that the next 208 GTi hot hatch could be offered in two forms – petrol and electric.

"My message will be that each time I launch a new car, it will be electrified, but you will buy your Peugeot and you will choose your powertrain," Jean-Pierre Imparato, Peugeot CEO told the publication.

"When you buy a Peugeot you will find design, the latest version of i-Cockpit, the upmarket trim levels like GT-Line, GT and perhaps GTi, because I don’t want to generate any difference between EV and combustion-engined models, but the customer will choose the powertrain."
