Infiniti Project Black S prototype unveiled
Paris car debuts new 298kW 'dual-hybrid' drivetrain
The Infiniti Project Black S prototype has been revealed and detailed ahead of its full debut at the 2018 Paris motor show, which kicks off next week.
The Project Black S is based on the Q60 Red Sport 400 coupe, and is a follow up to 2017 concept, but with a fleshed out "dual-hybrid" drivetrain making a total of 420kW of power.
At its core is the company's VR30 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, which cranks out 298kW of power. This is paired with three electric motor generator units.
One, named MGU-K, is responsible for recovering energy via regenerative braking. The other two motors, dubbed MGU-H, are attached to the car's turbochargers, and generate energy from the heat of the exhaust gases driving the turbos.
The dual-hybrid system allows the prototype to generate electrical power during both acceleration and deceleration. According to Infiniti, the concept car is capable of racing from 0-100km/h in under four seconds.
The luxury marque says the dual-hybrid setup has been engineered "specifically for road use", and was developed in conjunction with the Renault Sport Formula One team.
Another Formula One influence on the show car is the large carbon-fibre rear wing, which is said to have the same profile as the race team's Monza wing.
We expect Infiniti will provide more details about the car and drivetrain when it is fully unveiled next week.
