GAC Motors GS5 spied

Compact crossover spied, set for official unveil at Paris motor show

The new GAC Motors GS5 has been spotted ahead of its debut at the Paris motor show on October 2.

Photos of the compact SUV have surfaced on the Russian website car.ru, showing an undisguised example in production form.

These images come after GAC released design sketches of the new model, showing design features such as wraparound taillights and a ‘floating’ roof.

These features are carried across to the production car, albeit with more conventional proportions.

Inside, the GS5 features a large touchscreen, wireless inductive charging and a partially digital instrument display.

The GAC GS5 is rumoured to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with either 113kW or 126kW, mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

While additional specifications are yet to be released, it is likely the GS5 will be a front-wheel-drive only proposition.

GAC Motors has grown from producing 17,000 cars in 2011 to 500,000 in 2017, with the goal of producing one million cars a year by 2020.

It has also topped the J.D. Power Asia Pacific's China Initial Quality Study SM (IQS) for the past five years, and last year established its North American research and design centre in Silicon Valley.

GAC motors will be the only Chinese manufacturer to showcase their products at the Paris Motor Show this year.

The GS5 will likely be one of the first models launched in the United States, if GAC is able to follow through with its promise to start selling cars in America as soon as next year. This should be made possible thanks to a partnership with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
