2019 Audi R8 update could spawn another RWS – report

Missed out on the rear-wheel drive R8? There could be a new one coming soon.

The Audi R8 is due to get an update very soon – we've seen several prototypes testing recently – and the German marque is considering another run of rear-drive RWS versions thanks to the success of the current model.

Speaking with Britain's Autocar, Audi's marketing manager, Linda Kurz, said another rear-wheel drive supercar is "something we are looking into" for the facelifted model, which is believed to be scheduled for reveal later this year.

Kurz added that the outgoing R8 RWS, limited to just 999 units globally, was "a great success" for the four-ringed brand, explaining why it could be reborn for the mid-life refresh.

The 2018 model-year Audi R8 RWS was available in both coupe and drop-top 'Spyder' body styles, powered by the same 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 as the 'standard' R8.

Outputs are rated at 397kW and 540Nm of torque, with all that grunt sent to the rear axle via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Lamborghini makes a similar version of the related Huracan, though the Raging Bull's rear-drive supercar is a permanent fixture in the range, not a limited-run special.

Despite only using the rear wheels, the R8 RWS claims a 0-100 sprint of 3.7 seconds (0.2 slower than the quattro version) on its way to a top speed of 320km/h.

In Australia, the R8 RWS was priced from $299,950 for the coupe, and $321,000 for the Spyder.
