2019 Suzuki Jimny scores 3 stars in Euro NCAP testing
We still like the Jimny, but it struggled in the latest round of safety tests.
Suzuki's upcoming Jimny has scored just three stars in Euro NCAP testing, on the back of relatively low scores for adult occupant and vulnerable road-user protection.
The adult occupant protection rating was hindered by a steering wheel airbag that didn't quite inflate correctly, allowing the driver's head to contact the steering wheel rim. The front offset test also uncovered a risk of deformity around the front door pillars.
Both front seats offered marginal whiplash protection in a rear-end accident, while stiff windscreen pillars were one of the main reasons the car's vulnerable road user protection was rated 52 per cent, although that bluff nose can't have helped either.
Its autonomous emergency braking performance was also problematic, failing to detect cyclists and struggling to pick up pedestrians in low light. Both those criteria are relatively new to NCAP testing.
It's perhaps no surprise the Jimny didn't nail NCAP testing. It's tough to make small, blocky, affordable cars perform well in ever-tougher crash tests, which is largely why we haven't seen recreations of other rough, cheap off-roaders. The Subaru Brumby name was thrown around the office, for example, and it's an example the company's local boss has touched on before with CarAdvice.
