2019 Volkswagen Jetta hits 338km/h at Bonneville
Breaking the Southern California Timing Association’s Land Speed Record in the process
A highly modified example of the new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta has achieved a speed of 338km/h at the Bonneville Salt Flats, as part of the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association’s World of Speed event.
This speed was enough for it to take out Southern California Timing Association’s (SCTA) Blown Gas Coupe (G/BGC) class record.
To get to this speed, the Bonneville-beating Jetta used a highly-modified version of the familiar Volkswagen Group EA888 engine, producing 447kW at 8500rpm.
Extensive changes were made to ensure the car reached such a lofty speed, including the addition of a limited-slip differential, lowered suspension, a stripped-out interior and an aerodynamic body kit.
Scott Goetz, who piloted the Jetta said: “It was a terrific experience to drive this car on the salt. The car inspired a lot of confidence at very high speeds.
"I have no doubt that we could go even faster by running some more boost, but we are very happy to have the record, knowing that there is more to come in the car if we need it," Goetz elaborated.
The Bonneville Jetta was built by Bonneville preparation specialists THR Manufacturing in California in conjunction with Volkswagen USA.
