2019 Skoda Kodiaq RS teased again

Lots of black and big rims to feature on new Czech bi-turbo SUV.

Skoda has issued another set of preview images for its upcoming Kodiaq RS performance SUV, this time giving us a closer glimpse at the car's unique design touches.

Four different pictures have been released by the Czech brand, showing various elements distinguishing the Kodiaq RS from its lesser brethren – in particular, the Sportline variant.

First is the high-gloss black front grille (top), which includes the brand's new logo for its RS performance sub-brand. Previously, the 'V' – which stands for 'victory' – was finished in chrome. Now, it's red. Devil's in the details, folks.

Unique to the Kodiaq RS are new 20-inch 'Xtreme' alloy wheels, essentially a larger version of the design found on the Octavia RS. Hiding behind the fronts are 17-inch brake discs with red brake calipers.

At the rear, the Kodiaq RS gets two visible tailpipe finishers, rather than the faux chrome surrounds that adorn the rumps of Sportline versions. The new RS logo with red 'V' has been stuck on the tailgate, too.

Finally, there are more high-gloss black accents for the side mirrors and window frames as standard. The blue exterior paint you can see will also be a new colour unique to this model.

Scheduled to make its debut at the Paris motor show next month, the Skoda Kodiaq RS will be powered by the Volkswagen Group's 2.0-litre bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel, putting out 176kW of power and a beefy 500Nm of torque.

While not confirmed at this stage, drive will likely be sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic – as per the related Volkswagen Passat and Tiguan with the same engine overseas – with 0-100 believed to take around 6.5-6.7 seconds.

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice in June, Paul Pottinger, communications boss for Skoda's local division, said the Kodiaq RS is an unlikely starter for Australia – at least for the time being – as the 176TDI is currently not available for 'hot climate' regions like Australia.

However, Pottinger noted that the Australian arm of the Volkswagen Group is "actively addressing" our region's 'hot climate' designation, which is also responsible for locally-bound Volkswagen Golf R models being detuned compared to their European equivalents.

When asked if the Kodiaq RS will be offered with a second powertrain, such as the 206TSI petrol available in the Superb, Pottinger said it's "unlikely" for such a "specialised vehicle" to be offered with two engine options.
