2020 Bentley Continental GT Hybrid spied
Panamera-sourced plug-in hybrid power the next step for British luxury GT.
A prototype believed to be the upcoming Bentley Continental GT Hybrid has been spied undisguised by photographers this week.
While at first glance this vehicle looks like your 'regular' Bentley Continental GT, there's an extra flap on the left rear quarter panel, which is likely where the plug-in hybrid powertrain's charge point is located.
At this stage it's unclear whether the hybrid Continental will utilise the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 hybrid system from the Bentayga Hybrid and Porsche Panamera 4 e-Hybrid, or the more potent 500kW 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid from the Panamera Turbo S e-Hybrid.
While Bentley is still yet to disclose outputs for the Bentayga Hybrid, it's more than likely the bi-turbo V6 and accompanying electric motor produce somewhere in the vicinity of the 300kW/700Nm offered by the Panamera 4 e-Hybrid with the same powertrain, which is also claimed to offer up to 50km of electric range from its 14.1kWh battery pack.
However, given the Continental GT's more performance-oriented remit, it's possible the coupe could utilise the 500kW/850Nm powertrain from the higher-spec Panamera Turbo S e-Hybrid, which pairs a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine and electric motor, for up to 49km of electric-only driving.
The latter also claims a 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 310km/h when fitted to the related Porsche sedan. Should the Bentley use the same system, expect similar levels of performance.
Further details are few and far between this stage, and we'd expect the hybrid Continental GT to debut after the upcoming GTC convertible and high-performance Speed versions are revealed – likely to be later this year at the Paris motor show or early next year in Geneva.
