2019 Mercedes-AMG GT ‘Black Series’ spied

New exhaust setup hints at more focused super sports car flagship.

A development prototype believed to be the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has been snapped this week, further fuelling rumours the German performance specialist is working on a new flagship model.

Despite looking very much like an AMG GT R wrapped in a swirly black-and-white disguise, this prototype has one distinguishing feature – a different exhaust system with quad pipes sticking out in a Lexus-like stacked design. Normally, the GT R breathes through a large central outlet.

Given the very rough arrangement, we'd suggest this is a very early prototype testing a revised engine and exhaust setup. This likely means that the GT Black Series – or 'Clubsport' as some publications have speculated – will get an even more powerful engine.

Currently, the AMG GT R makes 430kW and 700Nm from its 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8. It's likely a 'Black Series' or 'Clubsport' version will get the full-fat 450kW/850Nm tune seen in the AMG E63 S sedan.

It's unclear whether the GT will get 4Matic+ performance all-wheel drive to handle the extra power and torque, we'll have to wait for an official announcement to confirm those details.

Should that be the case, however, the GT Black Series could easily approach the 3.0-second mark for its 0-100km/h sprint claim, given the rear-wheel drive GT R already hits triple figures in a claimed 3.6 seconds.
