Ford Europe has announced meaningful updates to the S-Max and Galaxy people movers, amid growing speculation they won't be offered for all that much longer.
The headline upgrade is a new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, offered in 88kW, 110kW and 139kW tunes. It'll be coupled with an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual, depending on spec, while both front- and all-wheel drive will be offered.
A twin-turbo model with 177kW will also be available, topping the range with its standard eight-speed automatic transmission and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.
From 2019, the entire automatic range will get adaptive cruise control with stop/go capability, enhanced blind-spot monitoring and, in right-hand drive markets (aka the UK), an electric parking brake switch that has been moved to the driver's side.
Jumping to the top-spec Vignale brings active noise cancellation, while the entire range has been treated to washer jets built into the windscreen wiper arms, new Chrome Blue and Diffuse Silver paint options, and red brake calipers for the ST-Line versions of each van.
Also facing speculation about its future, and shares its platform the with people-moving pair, suggesting the EcoBlue diesel and spec upgrades could show up in Ford's mid-size sedan/wagon.
A report quotes a spokesperson for Ford saying the company is "focused on aggressively attacking costs", and suggests the Mondeo could be cut to focus on more profitable, popular SUVs.
In response, Ford said it has new powertrains, interior and exterior upgrades in the works for its mid-sizer. We've already seen prototypes running around in camouflage, giving credence to that promise.
