2019 Ford Transit previewed

New commercial van family to offer mild-hybrid/plug-in hybrid tech, new connected functions.

Ford has announced it will reveal the updated Transit range at the Hanover CV show, which commences September 20.

Several big announcements will be made at the event, including the launch of a new two-tonne Transit featuring mild hybrid technology – a first for the segment – along with the debut of the Transit Custom plug-in hybrid, which will launch sometime  in 2019.

The new two-tonne Transit is scheduled for launch (in Europe) in mid-2019, featuring a new frontal design (previewed above) and an "all-new interior" with increased storage space.

Upgraded 2.0-litre 'EcoBlue' turbo-diesel engines will feature across the line-up, along with the option of 48V mild hybrid technology on models with manual transmissions for further improved fuel economy – particularly in stop-start traffic.

Meanwhile, the Transit Custom PHEV combines a 1.0-litre Ecoboost three-cylinder petrol engine which acts as a range extender. Using just the battery pack (of an unnamed capacity), the plug-in hybrid van can drive up to 31 miles (50km), while total driving range is rated at more than 300 miles (483km).

The Transit Custom will debut in "final production form" at the Hanover show, and also features dedicated information displays inside specific to the PHEV variant.

In addition to the new models with alternative powertrain systems, Ford will also use the Hanover event to showcase new connected vehicle technologies for its commercial vehicle range, including telematics and data services that aim to help fleet customers "optimise efficiency and vehicle utilisation".

Ford Telematics is said to "provide fleet operators with a web-based application providing solutions to help fleet professionals improve vehicle utilisation, maximise vehicle availability, optimise running cost and manage their drivers".

The second connected system, Ford Data Services, will "enable fleet operators to have the option of working with their own third-party service providers to access OEM-grade vehicle data – delivered directly from the vehicle to the “cloud” – to create their own bespoke fleet solutions".

Joining the new Ford vans in Hanover will be the new Ranger Raptor ute, scheduled to launch in Europe mid-2019.
