Koenigsegg preparing car capable of doing 0-400km/h in 14s

Hypercar maker spurred into action after Tesla unveiled its second-generation Roadster concept


Koenigsegg, the Swedish hypercar maker, is developing a new car capable of going from 0-250mph (402km/h) in around 14 seconds.

In a chat with Top Gear at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Christian von Koenigsegg described the unveiling of the second-generation Roadster prototype in 2017 as a "kick in the head".

Koenigsegg says "pushing the combustion engine into the wall to try to make it more power dense than an EV for as long as possible" is his current obsession, because he loves the sound and experience they offer.

As such, unlike the Roadster, which like all other Tesla products is an all-electric vehicle, the new Koenigsegg model will feature an electrified drivetrain with an V8 petrol engine at its core.

Within a few days of the concept's unveiling, Koenigsegg and his engineers hit on a formula combining the company's direct drive, hybrid, and freevalve technology, as well as a lowered compression ratio and more boost, to come up with a car ensuring his eponymous brand stays in the top-tier for street-legal performance.

The Tesla Roadster 2.0 concept car is claimed to have 10,000Nm of torque available at the wheels. The electric car is to have a 0-60mph (97km/h) time of 1.9 seconds, be able to hit 100mph (159km/h) in 4.2 seconds, and have a top speed of over 400km/h.
