Subaru won’t rule out return of a ‘hot’ Forester
Turbocharged SUV could make a comeback sometime after initial launch, local boss says.
Despite dropping turbocharged petrol and diesel options from the 2019 Forester, Subaru won't rule out the return of a performance variant of its new-gen SUV in the future.
Speaking to CarAdvice at the launch of the all-new Forester, Subaru Australia boss Colin Christie said that while a hot Forester isn't available at the moment, it's not a firm no for the future.
"The XT was a fantastic car and we love it. It was great fun. It was quite unique in the market. I think the reality is, and Subaru's done the exact right thing, which is where the growth or the potential growth or the future growth of Forester is which is attracting a bigger audience, will come from the core car," he said.
"I'm much happier that they've spent all their time and energy designing an incredible car, than potentially trying to do lots of different things at once and maybe not getting as good a car."
When asked specifically whether this meant the death of a 'hot' Forester, Christie wouldn't rule it out.
"There's certainly nothing in the near-term planning for it. But I wouldn't say it's been ruled out. I think Subaru's been very clear in their version that performance cars absolutely play a role. So Rex, STI, BRZ absolutely play a role for our brand. Whether that translates into another performance SUV, I'm not sure. But I certainly wouldn't rule that out."
While other brands are still finding their feet with performance SUVs, Subaru was arguably the first to have a proper crack. It would be a great shame to see Subaru fans miss out on a proper hot version of the Forester on this new platform.
