McLaren BP23 Speedtail to make more than 735kW

And it's going to be the fastest McLaren ever, with a top speed north of 390km/h.


McLaren has revealed more details of its upcoming BP23 Speedtail hypercar, which will serve as both the replacement for its P1 model, as well as the spiritual successor to the legendary F1.

McLaren Automotive CEO, Mike Flewitt, told Top Gear magazine the Speedtail would produce "more than” 735kW through the use of “a slightly different hybrid application” to the brand's previous P1 flagship.

Flewitt also confirmed the Speedtail will be built on a recognisable architecture, which likely means it'll retain the twin-turbo V8 seen in other McLaren models to work alongside the hybrid system.

This output is enough to make the Speedtail the fastest McLaren ever, with a top speed of 391km/h, narrowly beating the 90s-era F1 and its 386km/h marker.

“I might come out with John and take the opportunity to do a high speed run with our car, but we're not chasing a top speed for the sake of it," said Flewitt.

McLaren is branding the Speedtail as a ‘Hyper-GT’, with Flewitt promising a “more rounded” car than competitors such as the Koenigsegg Agera RS and Hennessey Venom F5.

Flewitt remarked the Speedtail will be “a better driving proposition” than competitors, with a development focus on making the car “super comfortable, super to drive.”

A number of elements of the Speedtail pay homage to the iconic F1, with the same 1+2 central driving position expected to feature.

Only 106 examples will be produced, the same number as the F1. This is well down on the 375 P1s produced between 2013 and 2015.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, all examples have already sold out. If any Speedtails do make it to Australia, the cost is rumoured to be in the vicinity of $3.5 million.
