Lamborghini mulling Senna rival – report

Super-limited flagship on the cards, though the company's focus is still on series production models.

The boss of Lamborghini has hinted the Raging Bull is considering a bespoke flagship to duke it out with the McLaren Senna and Aston Martin Valkyrie, according to a new report out of the UK.

Speaking with Autocar, Stefano Domenicali said the firm is mulling an "extreme aero" limited-run model "in the vein of the Centenario and Veneno".

While Lamborghini's boss added that series production models are "the main priority right now", the fact Domenicali is even talking about it leads us to believe such a vehicle is closer to reality than not.

Like the Centenario and Veneno, this "extreme aero" model would likely be based on the current Aventador, though given its track-oriented intentions, we'd wager much of the Aventador SVJ's running gear would feature including the active aerodynamics systems.

It could also be the first time we see the Italian marque utilise a hybrid powertrain, since Lamborghini's R&D boss. Maurizio Reggiani, has previously said the Aventador SVJ would likely be the "last time the V12 will be on its own."

We already knew the Raging Bull prefers the idea of hybridisation to turbocharging – despite the bi-turbo V8 in the Urus crossover – though the company is still yet to explicitly say its next line of supercars will feature electric assistance.

"I think the CO2 [requirements] will be attacked in the future with a hybrid machine, where we can leave the emotional naturally aspirated appeal but reduce dramatically the CO2 and fuel consumption using a hybrid," Reggiani told CarAdvice in March.

Should Lamborghini offer a new flagship, it will likely cost seven figures, while the very limited production run will likely be only double digits.
