2019 Mercedes-Benz C-Class priced from $63,400

Updated sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible family gets fresh looks, more tech, and available mild-hybrid powertrain.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has released pricing and preliminary specifications for the facelifted C-Class range, which goes on sale in September priced from $63,400 before on-road costs.

Light design revisions feature across the range, including AMG versions, while the entire C-Class family now gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster complemented by a 10.25-inch freestanding infotainment display, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Drivers are also treated to a new steering wheel incorporating the cruise controls for the first time, along with touch-sensitive controls to toggle the two displays.

Depending on variant, there's a new set of multibeam LED headlights available as an option or standard, which use 84 LEDs per headlight and four control units to calculate the "precise lighting conditions required" 100 times per second. These headlights also feature an automatic high-beam function, which can project up to 650m ahead of the vehicle, and shape the beam to shield leading or oncoming vehicles.

The C-Class can also be had with Mercedes-Benz's latest generation of driver assistance systems (standard on C300 and above), including adaptive cruise control with stop&go function, traffic sign assist, active lane-keep assist, blind-spot assist, and evasive steering assist.

Fitted as standard is an automated parking assistant, which can maneuver the vehicle into parallel and end-on parking spaces, as is autonomous emergency braking.

The entry-level C200 now features a 48V mild-hybrid system, dubbed 'EQ Boost'. Available in sedan, wagon, coupe and cabriolet body styles, the base model combines a new 135kW 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a belt-driven starter/alternator.

For short periods, the EQ Boost system can add an additional 10kW under acceleration, while also offering an eco-friendly 'gliding mode' that shuts the engine off when coasting for further enhanced efficiency.

Meanwhile, the mid-spec C220d (from $67,400) gets a new engine for 2019, swapping out the old 2.1-litre turbo-diesel for a more powerful 2.0-litre unit making 143kW and 400Nm – up 18kW over its predecessor. Coupe and Cabriolet models miss out on the diesel, however.

Sitting atop the respective ranges of all four body styles is the C300, with pricing to be announced closter to its October launch. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine now makes 190kW (up 10kW), though its claimed 0-100 time is unchanged at 5.9 seconds (sedan).

Moving into the Mercedes-AMG side the range, the C43 (from $107,900) and C63 (from $159,900) also pick up design and technology updates, while the C43 also picks up a power bump.

The 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 now makes 287kW and 520Nm, which is up 17kW on the previous model. Despite the upgrade, the AMG C43 retains its 0-100 acceleration claim – rated at 4.7 seconds for the sedan.

While the C63 S's outputs remain unchanged at 375kW and 700Nm, it is now fitted with a new nine-speed multi-clutch automatic with wet start-off clutch, which claims "faster bursts of speed and more spontaneous responses to the driver's accelerator pedal input".

There's no change to the AMG C63's performance times despite the new transmission. The C63 will arrive in Australia in January 2019.
