2020 MG GS: Australian late 2019 launch confirmed

New 'HS' model coming to Australia as second-gen GS, pitched as an alternative to premium marques and packed with high-end tech.

Australian buyers will see an all-new replacement for the ageing MG GS in late 2019, with the recently revealed MG HS confirmed to wear the GS badge here.

Dubbed the "Horse SUV", loosely translated from the Chinese press releases, the HS is the production version of the X-Motion concept revealed earlier this year.

Going by media information released in China, MG and parent SAIC Motor are pitching the new HS has an alternative to the likes of the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, thanks to its array of new infotainment and driver assistance technologies, along with an upmarket cabin.

Additionally, the company is targeting youngsters aspiring to own a premium product, with "young people" regularly referred to in the press materials.

In terms of the exterior design, the HS draws inspiration from the X-Motion concept that previewed it, which itself seemed to take various design cues from other models currently on sale.

There's elements of Audi and Mazda in the front-end design, namely in the slim headlights and prominent front grille, while the chunky rear haunches, window line kink, and LED tail-light design look very similar to the Infiniti QX50.

Inside, you'll be hard pressed to find any links to the ageing GS. The 10.1-inch floating tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system features various online services backed by an artificial intelligence system, which not only integrates with the navigation and media systems, but also various vehicle functions – you can adjust the climate controls or open the sunroof via voice commands, for example.

Ahead of the driver is a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, while audiophiles will appreciate the available eight-speaker Bose sound system claimed to turn the cabin into an "exclusive concert hall".

Other interior highlights include a configurable ambient cabin lighting system configurable with 64 different colours, along with a large panoramic sunroof measuring 1.19 square metres and has an opening area of 0.51 square metres.

There's extensive use of soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin as well, headlined by the eye-catching burgundy leather upholstery pictured.

MG has also fitted the HS with numerous driver assistance systems as part of the 'MG Pilot' package. Of the mentioned technologies, there's blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist, though the above image indicates there's some sort of forward-facing camera or radar system, likely for autonomous emergency braking and/or adaptive cruise control functions.

Power comes from a '30T' 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine making 170kW of power and 360Nm of torque, good for a claimed 7.5-second run from 0-100. The high-output engine is mated with all-wheel drive, though lower-powered front-drive versions are likely to be offered as well.

Full dimensions haven't been disclosed, but the company does quote a 2720mm wheelbase, which for reference is 20mm longer than that of a Mazda CX-5.

The MG HS goes on sale in China next month.
