2019 Kia ProCeed teased

New model transitions from a three-door body to a more practical five-door design

The rear of the new Kia ProCeed has been teased ahead of its unveiling on September 13, European time.

Although previous generations of the Pro_Cee'd were three-door hatchbacks, the new model loses an underscore and an apostrophe, but gains two doors to become a shooting brake.

Kia claims the new car will combine "stunning design with the space and versatility of a [wagon]", and will follow the "design blueprint" of the 2017 Kia Proceed concept.

Said to be designed "exclusively" for the European market, spy photos from June revealed the ProCeed will share a lot in common with the volume-selling Ceed five-door hatch and wagon models, including possibly all of its body panels ahead of the B-pillar.

It's almost certain the ProCeed will share its engine offerings with the Ceed, although it could debut the GT drivetrain, which is thought to include the 150kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbo used by the Hyundai i30 SR.

Although Kevin Hepworth, general manager for media and corporate communications at Kia Australia, cautioned he would "never say never" about any vehicle, it seems unlikely the new ProCeed will make the journey.

He said the company has "no plans to bring anything out of Slovakia at the moment", and any car hailing from the Central European republic would need to have a business case built on a "strong market presence", which probably won't happen unless the auto journalist population in Australia grows by many orders of magnitude.
