2019 BMW X6 spied

The next-generation BMW X6 has been spied during development testing this week, giving us a closer look at the company's upcoming SUV 'coupe' flagship.

Given its close family ties with the all-new X5, the X6 wears a very similar front end to its wagon-bodied sibling. Up front there's a new taller interpretation of BMW's double-kidney grille, flanked by slimmer headlights than currently offered.

Nestled in the lower front bumper is a radar sensor, likely for the vehicle's autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control systems.

Massive alloy wheels and brakes fill the arches of this particular vehicle – note the bright blue M Sport brakes too – while the subtle body kit indicates this car is an M Sport or M Performance variant.

Out back, it appears the new X6 will get far slimmer tail-lights, in keeping with BMW's new design language for its coupe and SUV coupe models.

As with previous versions of the X6, a sharply raked roofline extends into a fastback-style tailgate, a key differentiator compared to the X5.

Sticking through the trapezoidal tailpipe finishers are quad outlets, indicating that this vehicle is probably fitted with a twin-turbo V8 engine – likely the 340kW/650Nm 4.4-litre unit shared with the X5 xDrive50i.

Expect the new X6 to offer air suspension as per the X5, along with the company's latest and greatest driver assistance and active safety systems.

BMW OS7.0 will also feature, incorporating the marque's latest infotainment and navigation software combined with a new look and extended functions for the all-digital instrument cluster.

A firm reveal date for the new X6 is still to be confirmed, but we're anticipating a debut before the end of this year, ahead of a market launch in 2019.
