Kalashnikov CV-1: Russia’s answer to Tesla revealed

New EV blends retro styling with new-age electric powertrain technology. What do you think?

The all-electric Kalashnikov CV-1 has been revealed at an event in Moscow, touted as Russia's rival to the Tesla Model S.

Kalashnikov, known for producing firearms and military equipment – including the AK-47 – has designed the electric "supercar" to look like a 1970s Soviet hatchback.

According to reports overseas, Kalashnikov claims an all-electric range of 220 miles (350km) from the CV-1's 90kWh battery pack, and says it can accelerate to 100km/h in around 6.0 seconds.

The CV-1 is still a prototype at this stage, and as such its manufacturer hasn't disclosed how much a production version would cost.

It's not the first time the weapons specialist has branched out from its initial craft, selling other products like drones and more recently, a clothing line. Kalashnikov also already offers electric off-road vehicles including motorcycles and ATVs.

We don't think Tesla is really quaking in its boots right now, but given China has recently joined the raft established automotive manufacturing nations, we don't doubt that one day Russia could make vehicles for export markets too.
