McLaren 720S GT3 revealed

New race car 'on track' for 2019 competition debut, priced from £440,000.

McLaren Automotive has revealed the race-ready 720S GT3, scheduled to hit the track in 2019.

Based on the 720S road car, the GT3 version will be accessible to both professional and amateur drivers, with the company planning to have its new racer compete in various categories across Europe, the US and Middle East.

The vehicle is still undergoing testing, with development headed by McLaren's new customer racing division.

Like the road car on which it's based, the 720S GT3 features a carbon-fibre MonoCage II chassis structure and a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 – though outputs for the race car haven't been confirmed. They'll likely vary based on category and the relevant Balance of Performance rules.

The company says more than 90 per cent of components have been changed or optimised for the GT3 racer, including the body work, aerodynamics and suspension, along with a revised transmission, new brakes, and tyres.

Inside, there's an adjustable pedal box and steering wheel, while a rear-view camera, tyre pressure monitor, and parking sensors are available as an option. All versions of the 720S GT3 are left-hand drive.

Rounding out the race-ready cabin elements are an all-new roll cage, winged headrest seat, six-point harness, roof-hatch extraction system and side-impact foam.

"The McLaren 720S is such a multi-talented road car that we always knew honing its pure racing talents and making a GT3 car out of it would be an entirely natural process - and so it has been," said Dan Wainsley, motorsport director for McLaren Automotive.

"While largely a bespoke machine, the GT3 car is still a McLaren 720S at its core. Developing a race car is about optimising every component and the lightweight MonoCage II carbon fibre chassis is the perfect base for this."

The 720S GT3 joins the 570S GT4 race car, which has already claimed eight championship titles and more than 50 class wins globally since its debut in 2017.
