2019 Ferrari 488 Pista Spider unveiled
New convertible has comparable performance to coupe, but is 100kg heavier
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider has been unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.
Said to be the company's 50th drop-top model, the 488 Pista Spider is powered by the same 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 as the Pista coupe, which develops a maximum of 530kW of power at 8000rpm, and 770Nm at 3000rpm.
Thanks to the folding hardtop and other necessary structural changes, the Spider has a dry weight of 1380kg, 100kg more than 488 Pista coupe.
With the standard seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, Ferrari claims the new convertible can complete the 0-100km/h metric in 2.85 seconds, blow past 200km/h within 8.0 seconds, and hit a top speed of 340km/h.
For those interested, the coupe and convertible share the same 0-100km/h time and top speed, but the heavier convertible is 0.4 seconds slower to the 200km/h.
The Spider rides on 20-inch alloy 10-spoke wheels, although one-piece carbon-fibre wheels developed by Carbon Revolution in Geelong (which are 20 per cent lighter) are available as an extra-cost option.
Another standard feature is the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer, which its maker claims "makes on-the-limit driving more intuitive, controllable and predictable".
To keep weight in check, the Spider has simple strap instead of a interior door handle, aluminium foot plates instead of carpets, and plenty of faux suede and carbon-fibre components throughout the cabin.
