Aston Martin RapidE battery uncovered

'Most of the people who buy a Model S are buying it fully loaded. They’re not limited by their cash; they’re limited by the offer.'

Andy Palmer, Aston Martin CEO, has shared an image of the “production intent battery” set to power the upcoming RapidE electric four-door sports car.

Based on the existing Rapide AMR, the RapidE will be Aston Martin’s first foray into the world of electric and electrified vehicles, which are set to feature more heavily in its range by the year 2025.

The T-shaped, 800V battery should enable quicker charging times than the current breed of electric cars. For comparison, the batteries in the current Tesla Model S offer around 400V.

The RapidE is set to have a power output in the vicinity of 600kW, with an expected range of 322km.

First previewed in concept form in 2015, the RapidE will go on sale in late 2019 – around the same time as the Porsche Taycan, which will also feature an 800V battery.

Production will be limited to just 155 examples, and will serve as a precursor for the upcoming Lagonda luxury electric brand, which is set to launch its first model in 2021.

According to Palmer, the RapidE is set to appeal to those who want something more than what companies such as Tesla offer.

“Most of the people who buy a Model S are buying it fully loaded. They’re not limited by their cash; they’re limited by the offer. We’re looking to those guys looking for something above Tesla," he explained.

"That customer probably isn’t looking for ‘Ludicrous mode’. Our offer will have very credible acceleration – equal to a petrol Aston Martin – but you’ll be able to drive the car rapidly all the way around the Nürburgring without it deteriorating or conking out on you.”

The RapidE has yet to be confirmed for Australia. If it does reach us, expect a properly steep asking price, given the ‘regular’ Rapide AMR has been confirmed as starting at $459,950 plus ORCs.
