Audi R8 RWS: Sydney’s best-sounding tunnels

On track or on a remote piece of tarmac, these facts and figures make sense. But in the real world, in a city like Sydney with its traffic, speed cameras and intense focus on spirited driving, having that much power and the precise tactility that comes with the RWS’s weight saving fails to offer any real logic.

That is until you hear it.

Now, we’ve all seen videos of supercars threading through European Alps, the engine note bouncing off snow-capped mountains and the excitement that comes when the occupants see a tunnel ahead, knowing the growl or scream of their (insert supercar engine configuration here) will only be amplified and exaggerated once that right foot squeezes the loud pedal in such a confined and concentrated environment.

Unfortunately, there are a distinct lack of Alps and snow-capped peaks in the suburbs surrounding Sydney, but there is something the harbour city is certainly not lacking in: tunnels.

If ever a city resembled a Swiss-cheese approach to transport, it’s Sydney. And with a naturally aspirated V10 under our right foot, we think we’ve found the perfect way to enjoy the Audi R8 RWS's abilities, in a city and at legal speeds.
