Infiniti Prototype 10 concept revealed

Futuristic speedster debuts at Pebble Beach, hinting at 'striking future design cues' for premium brand.

Infiniti has unveiled the Prototype 10 concept for the Concours d'Elegance at Pebble Beach, California, which the company says "recaptures the spirit of early speedsters for an era of electrified performance".

"The Prototype 10 provides a window into Infiniti's desire to deliver driving pleasure, thrilling performance, and range confidence," the company said in its press release.

"A future vision realised by Infiniti designers, Prototype 10 evokes the spirit of early Californian speedsters, and is informed by some of the most iconic car designs of all time."

"The new concept is resolutely forward-looking in terms of its aesthetics and is a natural evolution of the form language first seen in the Infiniti Q Inspiration and Prototype 9."

While it may not spawn a production model, Prototype 10 indicates the marque's plans to make electrified motoring fun and engaging – Infiniti has already confirmed all its new models from 2021 will feature hybrid or electric powertrains.

Prototype 10 features a single-seat cockpit, dubbed 'monoposto', inspired by one-seater Formula race cars of decades past.

Inside, there's only a driver's seat, four-point harness, brake and accelerator pedals, along with a race-inspired steering wheel hooked up to the company's steer-by-wire system, removing the need for a proper steering column.

The seat itself is trimmed in black leather, accented with red top-stitching that matches the centre of the steering wheel.

Infiniti hasn't detailed what exactly powers the Prototype 10, instead saying "demonstrates the potential application for the brand’s future powertrain technologies".

Given the performance-oriented design, we reckon the concept uses a "high-performance parallel hybrid" system, which the company lists as one of its powertrain options for future vehicles alongside pure-electric and e-Power range-extender hybrid.

The Infiniti Prototype 10 is "purely a design study at this stage", but you can expect elements of its design to feature on future models. Additionally, it just reinforces the brand's commitment to ensure that electrification isn't seen as taking the fun out of motoring.
