2019 Toyota Corolla scores five-star ANCAP rating
Australia's best-selling passenger car snags top marks in latest safety tests.
The new-generation Toyota Corolla has been awarded a five-star safety rating by independent crash-testing authority ANCAP.
Australia's most popular passenger car scored 96 per cent for adult occupant protection, 83 per cent for child occupant protection, 86 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 76 per cent for safety assist.
The new Corolla managed a perfect 8/8 on both the side impact and oblique pole tests, along with 7.31 for frontal offset and 7.57 for full-width frontal impacts.
"The safety improvements provided in this generation of the Corolla are a significant step forward," said James Goodwin, ANCAP chief executive.
"The Corolla is a trusted nameplate and Australia and New Zealand's highest-selling passenger car, so it is encouraging to see this affordable, volume-seller continue to achieve a high safety standard."
Toyota has made a big deal of the standard safety equipment on the Corolla, with Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia vice president of sales and marketing, telling CarAdvice:
“We are positioning the new Corolla as a premium, high-quality hatch focused on performance and technology with more attractive styling, more spec including advanced safety, and more powerful yet more efficient drivetrains.”
These efforts haven't gone unnoticed by ANCAP. James Goodwin lauded the fact mainstream cars – not just the Corolla – are offered often being launched with the full gamut of safety tech standard.
"This result clearly shows safety is not a luxury, with private and corporate fleet buyers able to access high levels of safety as advanced collision prevention technologies become increasingly available," he said.
