2019 Mazda CX-3 pricing and specs

Standard reverse camera and plusher interior trims headline subtle upgrades to Mazda’s smallest SUV.

Mazda has revealed pricing and specifications for its 2019 CX-3 small SUV range, which follows the lead of international versions by introducing a new centre console design with armrest and a new larger 1.8-litre diesel engine option.

Amongst 2019 model year changes the CX-3 adopts a rear-view camera as standard equipment for the base model which sees a 7.0-inch touchscreen added across the range, while the top-spec Akari adds a 360-degree camera and adaptive cruise control with stop&go functionality.

Mazda's new range now starts from $23,990 drive-away for the cheapest manual front-wheel drive Neo Sport, up to $40,490 drive-away for the flagship Akari diesel with an automatic and all-wheel drive.

All variants now feature an electric park brake housed in a new centre console which also includes a padded armrest. Other detail changes include a new front grille insert on all models and redesigned tail-light internals for the sTouring and Akari versions.

Lower down the range Mazda has introduced new names for the two lower grade cars, mirroring changes to the Mazda 3 range with the Neo Sport and Maxx Sport variants stepping in for the previous Neo and Maxx grades.

Under the bonnet Mazda has tweaked the CX-3’s SkyActiv 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine to produce one extra kilowatt and three extra Newton metres for revised totals of 110kW and 195Nm.

Buyers who prefer diesel will have access to a new 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel which boosts outputs over the old 1.5-litre engine from 77kW to 85kW at the same 4000rpm while torque remains at 270Nm between 1600 and 2500rpm.

Fuel consumption for the new model rises for some variants, with the most frugal auto Neo Sport using an official 6.3 L/100km (up 0.2 L) and the thirstiest variant, the AWD Akari petrol recording 6.7 L/100km (unchanged) The all-wheel drive diesel also maintains its 5.1 L/100km figure despite a larger engine while the front-wheel drive Maxx Sport diesel drops by 0.1L to 4.7 L/100km.

Other changes introduced with the 2019 CX-3 include new urethane front seat cushioning designed to improve comfort. On Maxx Sport and above gloss black pillar trims give a more upmarket look, plus those higher-grade cars come with a new rear centre armrest with two cup holders.

Other tweaks include a new 18-inch alloy wheel design on the sTouring and Akari, along with a change to full leather seat trim in a choice of Pure White or Black for Akari models.

The adoption of an electric park brake Across the range sees the infotainment system’s Command Controller relocated, moved forward slightly for easier access.

Mazda has rounded out the equipment changes with minor changes to suspension and electric power steering.

Along with the new equipment highlights, the petrol-only Neo Sport comes standard with 16-inch wheels with full wheel covers, halogen headlights, rear park sensors, six-speaker audio with AM/FM/DAB+ radio, Bluetooth, height adjustable front seats, and black cloth trim.

Step up to the Maxx Sport (starting from $25,490) and the equipment list grows to include 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control (previously reserved for sTouring) auto lights and wipers, satellite navigation, a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter, and blind spot alert with rear cross traffic alert.

At the upper end of the range the sTouring (from $30,740) gains cloth and Maztex leather-look trim, a flip-up heads up display, proximity key entry, LED headlights, tail lights and fog lights, auto dimming rear view mirror, 18-inch alloy wheels and a safety step up including front park sensors, traffic sign recognition, and driver attention alert.

The range-topping CX-3 Akari (from $37,490) goes further still adding leather trim with a power adjustable driver's seat, front seat heating, a power-sliding sunroof, adaptive LED headlights, and lane departure warning plus the new additions like radar (adaptive) cruise control and surround view camera.

Mazda has plans to add an even more luxed up Akari LE variant in the future, but has yet to convey details of what that model will include.

With the addition of a rear-view camera to the Neo Sport, all CX-3 models now boast range-wide safety systems including six airbags, forward and reverse autonomous emergency braking (called Smart City Brake Support), traction and stability control, hill launch assist, and front seatbelt pretensioners.

Mazda Australia managing director, Vinesh Bhindi, described the MY19 changes as pivotal to maintaining the CX-3’s premium positioning amongst the mainstream small SUV market

“With its original styling, great ride and handling and impressive practicality, Mazda CX-3 was a class leader from the minute it arrived in Australia and has remained so ever since,” he said.

“This latest round of upgrades enhances the winning elements of the Mazda CX-3, elevating its elegance, performance and functionality, firmly cementing its place as the small SUV of choice.”

Mazda predicts that front-wheel drive models will make up approximately 92 per cent of sales, while the updated diesel will account for just one per cent of the sales pie. Maxx Sport is slated to be the most popular variant accounting for over half of all CX-3 sales while the Neo Sport will be the least popular accounting for around seven percent of sales.
