New mid-range sedan spotted with sportier styling as the brand prepares to launch in Australia
The next-generation Genesis G80 has been spied undergoing hot weather testing in the USA alongside the new Kia Soul.
Up front, the new G80 has a sharper, almost triangular grille inspired by the Essentia concept. From the side we can see the car's overall proportions, which hint clearly it will stick with a rear- and all-wheel drive platform.
The next-generation sedan seems to feature a more fastback-style rear with a more pronounced taper from the roofline to the boot section.
From what we can make out behind the layers of disguise, the new G80 will have slimmer headlight and tail-light designs. In all likelihood, the car will feature more sporty styling flourishes to a make it an obvious progression from the upcoming G70, and give the fledgling brand a shot at luring away BMW drivers.
It's not yet known what drivetrains will be offered in the new car. The current model, an updated version of the vehicle originally launched as the Hyundai Genesis, is available with a 3.3-litre V6, 3.8-litre V6, 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6, and 5.0-litre V8.
Given the market's shift towards electrification, a plug-in hybrid variant would probably be a good bet.

Although the brand has been launched in South Korea and North America, the actual rollout outside the domestic market hasn't been very smooth, with the American arm flipping and flopping over whether the luxury marque should have its own independent dealership network, or be hosted by a fraction of Hyundai dealers.
Locally, the brand's local debut has been pushed back until the last quarter of this year. During its early stages, the Australian range will be limited to the G70 and G80, with the range-topping G90 ruled out as it is only available in left-hand drive.
