Project WTF-2J, episode 2: Pre-purchase inspection, chassis dyno and handy engine checks

Usually you do some really specific things before you buy a new car.

You test drive it, take it for a shakedown, ask for dyno sheets, and get general details about the health of the engine. However, because we bought this Supra interstate, we did none of that...

Sometimes there are little things that are left owner from the previous owners, scratches, missing parts, maintenance issues, or in our case, a lot of rubber.

We wanted to set a baseline power reading and just check that her 2J wasn't going to detonate the second we wound some boost in (impossible, right?). So we took her down to our local performance shop, GT Auto.

We also spied our WTF86 up on the hoist getting some work done. That is for a much later episode, though!

SOME TLC

We decided it would be best to do some tests on the engine, and work out if there was anything wrong with the Supra, before pushing it too hard. Specifically a compression test, a leak-down test, a coolant pressure test, and last but not least, a dyno run.

The Supra actually impressed us a little bit. We thought it was going to make much less power than it actually did. With no major issues and a decent score on the dyno it was time to get WTF-2J ready for the drags to see the the power she laid down.

To get some tips about what inspections you might want to run before your next purchase, just watch the video at the top.
