$8 million dollars of luxury cars crushed in Philippines: the “war against smuggling”

Deterrent or dumb?

Just last week, millions of luxury cars and bikes were crushed by the order of President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Roa Duterte. The entire event was live-streamed to their government's Facebook page.

These vehicles had been illegally imported into the country and, once found, they were scooped up by the authorities for destruction.

The government believes that crushing these cars live and for the world to see is a deterrent against the illegal importation. This seems to be a stance taken by many countries around the world, whether it be for the same reason or just plain old street racing.

The total 'death count' for this destruction amounted to 68 contraband luxury vehicles and eight contraband luxury motorbikes from Harley Davidson, Triumph, and Chopper.

Among these 68 cars were a Lamborghini Gallardo, several Porsche 911s, a Pulsar GTI-R, a handful of Mercedes-Benz SLKs, multiple Nissan 350Zs, a Mustang, and an E60-generation BMW M5.

There were even some beautiful R34s. Each and every one of these cars deserved better than being crushed and left to rot.

We can't help to think that these cars didn't deserve this. It is not only a waste of perfectly good, beautiful and in some cases rare cars, but it is also a waste of materials. People spent time effort and sometimes their lives building these vehicles just for them to be crushed.

At the very least, you would like to think the government would part them out or auction them off overseas, sadly, a scrap yard is where these beauties will stay.
