2019 MG 3 pricing and specs

Auto-equipped Chinese hatchback kicks off at $15,990 drive-away.

MG has revealed pricing and specs for the facelifted 3 range, headlined by the addition of an automatic transmission and a new media system with smartphone mirroring.

The range will start with the MG 3 Core, priced from $15,990 drive-away. Power comes from a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine making 82kW and 150Nm, hooked up to a four-speed automatic transmission. Claimed fuel use is 6.7L/100km on the combined cycle.

Standard equipment includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, a four-speaker Yamaha Digital Sound system, tartan-patterned cloth seat trim with contrast stitching, and 15-inch alloy wheels. How very British.

Manual air conditioning is standard, while vanity mirrors, a seat-back map pocket and body-coloured mirrors with integrated indicators are all reserved for the top-spec car. It's the little things, right?

Safety kit includes a rear-view camera, rear parking sensors and emergency brake assist, which ramps up brake pressure if the car detects the driver being light on the pedal in an emergency stop (not to be confused with autonomous emergency braking).

Jumping up to the MG 3 Excite bumps the price to $17,490 drive-away, and adds a bit of extra garnish to the basic package. You get a six-speaker audio system with USB input and 'Yamaha 3D Sound Field Digital Processing Sound' – we're going out on a limb here, but you can probably ignore the marketing guff and assume it sounds punchier than the base setup.

You get a slightly sportier bodykit and 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels atop the base specification, along with pleather/tartan-patterned seats in place of the basic units.

Five colours will be offered across the range: Tudor Yellow, Dover White, Regal Blue, Bristol Red and Scottish Silver. Notice a theme with those names? The final three listed are metallic, the first two 'standard'.

The MG 3 will be sold through the brand's 21-strong dealer network, which has recently expanded to include showrooms in Adelaide, Bundoora and Ballarat. As with the rest of the range, the MG3 gets a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty with seven years of roadside assist.

"We’re focused on our goal of reinvigorating this historic, trusted badge, by producing quality vehicles that are affordable, fun, and packed with a range of exciting features," Danny Lenartic, MG Motor Australia managing director, said.

Our continued growth is testament to our rapidly expanding customer base, and we’re delighted to provide a segment leading 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty and roadside assistance on the new product range,”
