Alfa Romeo Mito production ending in early 2019 – report

Reports from Europe have confirmed the three-door hatchback's demise.

The long-serving (should that be suffering?) Alfa Romeo Mito will be out of production early in 2019, according to reports from Europe.

There was no mention of the two-door hatch in Fiat Chrysler's five-year plan earlier this year, but Autocar has now confirmed its downfall. It'll be replaced by a compact SUV, shock horror, because the body style is more in keeping with buyer tastes around the world.

Roberta Zerbi, head of FCA Europe, said the "Mito is a three-door and people are choosing more and more five-door cars" in 2018.

“This is the one that will allow us to talk to a wider audience, a younger audience of 30- to 40-year-olds," Zerbi said of the upcoming sub-Stelvio crossover.

“It can help fill the gap between the Giulietta and Stelvio. And people that bought a Mito in the last couple of years – people grow up, start having children," she elaborated, suggesting those people are getting to the point where they might need a bigger new car.

Launched in 2008, the Mito has survived beyond the average lifecycle globally. It was updated in 2010, 2014 and 2016, while a more powerful Quadrifoglio Verde model was added to the range in 2009.

It was dropped from the Australian line-up in 2016, after struggling to find buyers during its seven years Down Under.

Are you sad to see the Mito go?
