Ford Mustang: 10 millionth example rolls off the production line

That's a lot of Pony Cars over 54 years.

Ford has celebrated the production of the 10 millionth Mustang at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan, more than five decades after the first example rolled off the line.

As you'd expect, Ford has specced its modern milestone car to match the original... sort of. The car is a GT V8 Convertible finished in Wimbledon White, the same hue as the 1964.5 Mustang bearing VIN-001.

Where the modern car is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 making 460hp (343kW), hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission, the original made just 164hp (122kW) and offered just a three-speed manual.

More than 60 owners gathered at Flat Rock to celebrate the occasion, while a trio of World War Two P-51 Mustang fighter planes performed a flyover.

"Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favourite around the world,” said Jim Farley, president of global markets at Ford.

“I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car – a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.”

Along with Flat Rock, the Mustang has been built in San Jose (California), Metuchen (New Jersey), and Dearborn (Michigan) throughout its life.
