2019 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe spied

Sleek new four-door 'coupe' has been photographed for the first time, following in the concept's footsteps.

These photos of two BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe prototypes seemingly confirm the styling details of a four-door flagship with a sloping roofline, revealed earlier this year in a trademark filing.

It also follows the template set out by the M8 Gran Coupe concept, which was unveiled at this year's Geneva motor show.

The Gran Coupe is expected to round out the new 8 Series' body style offerings, which also include a coupe and will expand to encompass a yet-to-be-launched convertible.

It seems as though the four-door will share the two-door's aggressive front-end design, while the back-end is also eerily similar to the coupe. The key difference will, of course, be the number of passenger doors, and the length of the wheelbase.

Given the car's niche market and the need to standardise drivetrains as much as possible, it's almost certain the Gran Coupe will feature the same engine options as the already-revealed coupe.

So far we know the coupe will be available as the M850i xDrive with a 390kW/750Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, and as the 840d xDrive with a 235kW/680Nm 3.0-litre straight-six turbo-diesel engine. Both models are hooked up to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
