Lexus LFA: 9 remain in American dealerships

'Some of these cars may never be sold, except perhaps by the dealer's heirs'.

Remember last year, when we covered the 12 unsold Lexus LFAs sitting in American dealerships? It turns out that story, or the overseas digging behind it, didn't cause ultra-wealthy Lexus fans (we know you're hiding somewhere) in North America to stampede their local showroom and lay down a deposit.

Even though just 500 were made worldwide, Lexus struggled to fill all the required LFA build slots in North America. After demand dried up, and existing buyers had been offered a second vehicle, dealerships and executives were given the chance to buy a car.

Some dealer principals bought cars for themselves, while others parked them in the window as a halo car. Maybe they had dreams of selling them eventually, maybe they never intended to move them on – either way, that's a huge number of cars without owners given the LFA's global exclusivity.

According to Autoblog, which uncovered the story last year, three of the 12 cars sitting on dealer lots have been sold over the past twelve months, dropping the 'unsold' count to nine.

"Some of these cars may never be sold, except perhaps by the dealer's heirs," Lexus told Autoblog. That would be a shame, but it also means we could see some very low mileage LFAs popping up at auction houses in a few decades.

Start saving, folks.
