Aston Martin DBX production to kick off in ‘late 2019’

St. Athans factory is nearing completion, bringing the high-riding Aston Martin a touch closer.

Aston Martin has confirmed production of its upcoming DBX SUV will start late next year, having completed the second phase of its new St. Athan, Wales, production facility.

The factory, which is being created in three converted ex-Ministry of Defence hangars in South Wales, will bring 750 new jobs to the region – 150 of which have already been hired as part of its preparation for production.

“We are delighted at the progress being made at the St Athan site," said Andy Palmer, Aston Martin president and chief executive.

"The team have done a fantastic job in advancing the facility and I was incredibly proud to chair our first Board meeting at the new plant. Wales has a long history of engineering excellence and the Board is delighted that it will play such an important part in Aston Martin’s development.”

The DBX itself is more of a mystery than the factory plans. We know it'll look nothing like a DB11 or Vantage, and we know it won't be constrained by a tricky platform-sharing arrangement.

As for power? Well, there are rumours it'll be offered with a choice of hybrid power, potentially paired with a V8 engine sourced from Mercedes-AMG, but nothing has been locked in at this point. We know it should look good, based on the concept.

"It’s our architecture, so every millimetre is determined where I want it, where it’s right for vehicle architecture to make it drive, ride and handle beautifully, and have a brilliant internal package," Marek Reichman, Aston Martin chief creative officer, told CarAdvice last year.

"Can and will it be beautiful? Yes, because of that proportion. Will it look like an Aston Martin? Yes."
