2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS pricing and specs

Slinky new four-door coupe will kick off at $136,900, with lots of standard equipment and a sharp new look.

Mercedes-Benz has released pricing and spec information for the third-generation CLS, which has already touched down in CLS450 4Matic form this week.

The range will start, however, with the CLS350, priced from $136,900 before on-road costs. Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder bi-turbo engine making 220kW and 400Nm, put to the rear wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox. An extra 150Nm is available from the EQ Boost mild-hybrid system when the driver buries the throttle.

As you'd hope of a Mercedes-Benz worth over $130k in base trim, the CLS350 is well equipped. Air suspension is standard, along with a full gamut of active safety features. Autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, driver attention alert and a surround-view camera are all included, along with adaptive cruise control.

If an accident is unavoidable, Pre-Safe will move to prepare the car for impact. There are nine airbags, too. On the options front, a Comfort Package ($7100) adds ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated front armrest and active seat bolsters to the CLS350 and CLS450.

The Edition 1 package ($7900) is also available on non-AMG models, and brings 20-inch black alloy wheels, a diamond radiator grille, high-gloss black exterior accents, 'Edition 1' badging, an IWC clock on the dashboard and a bevy of limited-edition plaques around the cabin.

Wireless phone charging is $440, a TV tuner is $2200, tri-zone climate control will set you back $1450, and tyre-pressure monitoring is a $680 add-on.

A dual-screen infotainment system with a 12.3-inch central display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is standard, along with a 13-speaker sound system, ambient lighting, DAB+ radio, heated memory seats and open-pore wood trim.

Moving up to the CLS450 4Matic bumps the price to $155,529 before on-road costs. Your extra money brings a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six making 270kW and 500Nm, with a further 250Nm on offer thanks to the EQ Boost hybrid system, feeding power to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Atop the CLS350's spec, it gains the 'Energising Comfort Control' system from the S-Class, which uses the climate control, massaging seats, mood lighting and stereo to improve the driver's mood.

A larger 80-litre fuel tank, sports exhaust, soft-closing doors, an interior monitoring system and tow-away protection are also standard over the base car.

Topping the range is the AMG CLS53 4Matic+ (below), priced from $179,529 before on-roads. Power comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six pumping out 320kW and 520Nm, with 250Nm extra available from the EQ Boost hybrid system in brief spurts. Like the CLS450, it's mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

But where the 450 has a regular 4Matic setup, the AMG 53 runs with the 4Matic+ system for a fully variable front/rear torque distribution, designed to offer a rear-drive feeling when the road is dry and all-wheel drive grip when it's greasy.

Compared to its non-AMG brethren, it gains a limited-slip differential on the rear axle, an AMG performance exhaust, 20-inch wheels and AMG-fettled interior goodies, including the seats and steering wheel.

The CLS450 is already in showrooms, with the CLS350 and AMG CLS53 models to follow during the fourth quarter of 2018.
