Citroen planning Australian ‘relaunch’ in 2019

Updated Cactus delayed, C5 Aircross a priority for next year.

Citroen Australia has big plans for its local range in 2019, in line with the company's 100th anniversary celebrations, though it means we may have to wait a little longer for some new models.

Speaking with CarAdvice, Peugeot Citroen Australia's PR and corporate affairs manager, Tyson Bowen, said the local division is planning to "relaunch" the brand Down Under.

"We are currently evaluating the applicability of all Citroen products for the Australian market as we move towards the 100th anniversary of the brand in 2019," he said.

"At this stage, we have confirmed C3 hatch and C3 Aircross [which launches later this year], and we'd like to see the C5 Aircross [below] added to the portfolio."

"For the time being, we will continue to offer C3, C4 Cactus, Grand Picasso and Berlingo," he added.

It appears the facelifted C4 Cactus, which was revealed in October last year, will be delayed for the time being. Bowen added there's "enough stock of the current model in the supply chain to see us through to next year".

Previously, the new Cactus was scheduled for a "late 2018" release Down Under.

However, the C3 Aircross SUV is scheduled for a fourth-quarter launch in Australia, complete with a "high level of specification" including "comprehensive driver safety and support aids" – a logical move considering our market's increasing taste for SUVs.

It's likely the high-riding C3 Aircross will essentially take over the current C4 Cactus's 'small crossover' position in Citroen's local line-up, as the updated Cactus has been styled to look more like a larger C3 hatchback rather than an SUV.

The larger C5 Aircross would serve as a worthy new flagship locally for the French brand, competing against the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, and the related Peugeot 3008.

Given Peugeot has seen decent growth since the local release of the 3008 and 5008 – they're now the brand's top two sellers – it's no surprise that Citroen's local arm is keen to add the C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross to Australia's burgeoning small SUV and medium SUV segments.
