2019 Suzuki Jimny: 37 pre-orders already in the bank
People are clearly keen to get their hands on the latest Jimny in Australia.
The new Suzuki Jimny sent our commenters into a spin when it was confirmed for Australia on July 10. Turns out that online excitement is translating into deposits, with almost 40 pre-orders for the compact off-roader already in the bank.
Speaking with CarAdvice this morning, Suzuki Australia general manager for automotive, Michael Pachota, said dealers were being approached by customers before the car was even confirmed for our market. Along with the cute-but-tough looks, he said the car is already appealing to one-time Sierra and Jimny owners searching for a simple, tough modern take.
When it arrives, the car will be motivated by a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 75kW of power and 130Nm of torque. Fuel economy details and transmission choices remain to be seen, but we'd suggest the five-speed manual and four-speed auto offered overseas will make journey Down Under. Time will tell.
Ground clearance sits at 210mm, up 20mm on the outgoing car, and there's a proper ladder-frame chassis under the skin. Forget cutesy city SUVs, this is a proper off-roader with AllGrip Pro 4WD and a reduction gear.
We're expecting a range of modern active safety features to be included in the car, like autonomous emergency braking, stability control, along with front, side and curtain airbags. Behind the wheel, expect to see a 7.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with inbuilt navigation.
“The Jimny is synonymous with the Suzuki brand and to have an all-new model on its way is something worth talking about. The Australian landscape will be a true test for the iconic 4WD and I have no doubt it will rise to the challenge,” Pachota said at the car's launch.
“I am very excited and highly anticipating the return of this legendary off-road compact SUV, in its all-new guise, to complement our already strong line-up of Suzuki vehicles in Australia."
