Bugatti Chiron recalled for airbag fix
Two US-based hypercars will have seats flown to France for repairs.
It appears even the ultra-rich are affected by manufacturing defects... The Bugatti Chiron has been recalled for faulty side airbag inflators, and you'll be interested to know how the marque plans to conduct the repairs.
According to the NHTSA's Safety Recall Report, just two examples of the quad-turbo hypercar have been recalled, both based on the US, due to improperly-installed heat shields for the side airbags.
During internal testing, Bugatti noted that there were "burn traces" on the airbag near the gas generator, which the company says "reduces the performance of the airbag".
The two affected owners will be contacted via mail, and will then be prompted to make an appointment with Bugatti's flying doctors to have the components fixed – but it'll be done in the typically excessive Bugatti way.
"Official Bugatti partners" will remove the seats with faulty airbags, package them in special wooden boxes, and send them off to the company's headquarters in France.
From there, the seats will be inspected for the improperly-installed heat shields, and if the condition is present the entire seat will be sent back to the supplier for a replacement airbag module. Once fixed, the seats will be shipped back to the US and installed in the affected Chirons.
The process will be done free of charge, as is generally the norm for safety recalls. Considering a Chiron costs over US$4 million ($5.39 million), you'd hope the manufacturer would go to great lengths to have your vehicle repaired.
