2019 Porsche 911 spied undisguised

The 2019 Porsche '992' 911 has been snapped without camouflage for the first time, revealing an evolutionary rear end in keeping with the new Panamera and 718 Cayman. Surprise surprise, right?

We already had an idea the new 911 would look similar to the current car, which itself looks similar to the car it replaces, which looks like... you get the idea. The rear-engined Porsche is part of the automotive furniture, and it didn't get that way through rapid year-on-year reinvention.

Slimmer, clear-lensed tail-lights are the main change, although the entire rear end appears squarer than we've previously seen from Porsche. With no badging, we're not sure if this is a base Carrera or a Carrera S, but the relatively central quad exhaust and diffuser suggest it could be a higher-spec car. Time will tell.

Along with the usual internal-combustion variants ranging from Carrera to GT3 RS, we're expecting the range to expand and include the first 911 Hybrid. Speaking earlier this year, August Achleitner, head of the model line, said there's a good reason the 911 has appeared to change slowly over the years.

“With each innovation, the decisive factor for me is whether it suits the character of the 911,” he said.

“We don’t necessarily have to be the first in this regard with the 911. What’s crucial, rather, is that every innovation be offered in a typical Porsche manifestation... Even where the public might be expecting a bigger ‘wow factor,’ in the long run a certain aesthetic reserve pays dividends.”

One area we're expecting to change dramatically next year is the interior. Spy shots have revealed a far more modern layout than previously offered, with low-set air vents and what appear to be touch-sensitive controls on the centre stack. Although the big, central rev counter has been retained, it's flanked by an all-digital display.

We'll have to wait and see for the full reveal, naturally.
