2019 Nissan Leaf E-Plus to have more power, better range

First details about extended-range variant emerge, not confirmed for Australia

The first details about the oft-discussed, extended-range Nissan Leaf have been revealed ahead of its expected global debut later this year, or early in 2019.

In addition to revealing the model's E-Plus moniker, Brian Maragno, director of electric vehicle marketing for Nissan North America, confirmed to AutoGuide the new variant will not only have a much improved range, but also more power to boot.

“A larger capacity battery lends itself towards two things. One is obvious, more range. The other one, which is maybe a little less obvious, but equally as true, is additional horsepower and output," Maragno noted.

He said the Leaf E-Plus would have around 150kW of power, and a range of over 320km.

At present the standard version of the second-generation Leaf has a 110kW/320Nm electric motor, a 40kWh lithium-ion battery, and a range of 243km based on the US EPA's testing procedure.

The company has yet to reveal the capacity of the E-Plus' battery pack, the electric motor's torque output, or the price premium it will carry over the standard model.

Australia

Nissan said: "While we consider all new models and variants for the Australian market, Nissan’s focus is on preparing for the arrival of the second-generation Leaf which is expected before the end of the current [Japanese] fiscal year."
