Opel teases new ‘bold and pure’ design language

Compass-inspired face to grace the next generation of Opels.

Opel has teased its upcoming 'bold and pure' design language, set to grace a new 2018 Brand Concept car at some point in the next six months.

The new concept was teased with a single photo overnight, and will kickstart a new era under Peugeot Citroen's ownership, after more than 60 years under the General Motors umbrella.

With broad, edgy headlights and a low bonnet, we're seeing hints of the GT Concept unveiled in 2016 (below), although there's no doubt that design will be refined for 2018 tastes.

"Strong proportions, simple but sculptural surfaces, bold graphics, and rare but extremely well executed details – the 2018 Brand Concept we are preparing continues to develop the principles we explored with the GT Concept," said Mark Adams, vice president of Opel design.

"There is a clear continuity and consistency in the way we express Opel’s values. However, we have taken several steps forward and are now setting the structure for the future face of Opel. This will be articulated around what we call the Opel Compass."

When he talks about the Opel Compass, he's referring to a face where a strong strake running down the centre of the bonnet intersects with the horizontal daytime running lights. The crosshairs in picture atop this article should give you an idea as to how that'll stack up.

The first cars to get the new corporate face won't appear until after 2020, but elements of the fresh design language are likely to pop up on the upcoming Corsa and Mokka X facelifts.
