2019 Ariel Atom 4 unveiled, will be certified for Australia

Next-generation car debuts with turbocharged Honda Civic Type R engine

The Ariel Atom 4 has been unveiled overnight, and will be certified for sale in Australia from 2019.

Simon Saunders, managing director of Ariel, claims "the Atom 4 is the biggest change to the car since we originally released it in 1999" with the only parts carried over from the Atom 3 being the clutch, brake pedal, and fuel cap.

The Atom 4 has the Honda Civic Type R's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine generating 239kW of power at 6500rpm, and 420Nm of torque at 3000rpm.

With a six-speed transmission, rear-wheel drive, a limited-slip differential, and tipping the scales at just 595kg, the Atom 4 has a claimed 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of 2.8 seconds, a 0-100mph (0-161km/h) time of 6.8 seconds, and a top speed of 261km/h.

The new Atom 4 has a new suspension system, steering setup, brakes, body panels, and chassis. As standard the Atom 4 is fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels paired with 195/50 Avon ZZR tyres at the front, and 17-inch rims with 255/40 rubber at the rear.

Stopping ability comes courtesy of 278mm ventilated disc brakes at the front, and 253mm discs at the rear, all with two-piston callipers. The car rides on adjustable double wishbone suspension at both ends, Bilstein monotube dampers, and Eibach springs.

Around 100 Atom 4s will be hand built per year at the company's factory in Crewkerne, Somerset. The car will also be built under licence in South Boston, Virgina for the North and South American markets.

According to Ariel, the Atom 4 will be put through ADR (Australian Design Rules) certification allowing it to go on sale from 2019. No word yet about pricing.

"British-built, low volume vehicles appeal on many different levels and type approval is key to our future commitment to service those markets effectively," Saunders said in a statement.

"As well as our existing network of dealers, we will appoint new key agents in various countries, to make sure that as many potential customers have access to Atom 4 as possible".
