More Aston Martin and Red Bull cars coming, Valkyrie could go enduro

The forthcoming Aston Martin Valkyrie is already the sort of car to break adjectives, with the promise that it will deliver similar performance to a top flight racer. Yet it looks set to just be the start of a longer collaboration between Aston and the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team.

The Valkyrie is being jointly developed by both organisations, under the leadership of Adrian Newey, the man who designed F1 cars that won no fewer than 10 constructors’ championships. But now we have apparent confirmation from Christian Horner, RBR’s team principal, that the collaboration is set to go considerably further.

Aston CEO Andy Palmer has already said Aston is planning to build a second mid-engined car positioned below the Valkyrie, and aimed squarely at the supercar establishment. And at Silverstone this weekend, Horner confirmed to journalists, including this CarAdvice correspondent, that RBR is involved in this project, too – plus potentially others to follow.

“We have a growing advanced technology department within Red Bull and we’re all fully involved with the two cars, the Valkyrie and then the track version (beyond the '002' AMR Pro, shown in this article),” Horner said.

"We’ll be heavily involved in 003 and then we’ll be looking at fourth-iteration and fifth-iteration cars as well," he added, casually.

An Aston spokesman was predictably keen to stress that anything beyond the son-of-Valkyrie model – which is clearly known as 003 internally - is currently no more than an aspiration rather than an active project, Horner’s comment made it clear that some serious thought is being invested into creating a longer term future between the two brands.

Horner also confirmed, as we’ve previously reported, that Red Bull is keen to have a crack at the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo’s astonishing 5:19 Nurburgring Nordschleife record: “it’s fantastic what Porsche have done with the record and it would certainly be fun to have a go at it, I think with the track version of the Valkyrie. It’s early days but it’s something that’s whetted everybody’s appetite.”

He also said that consideration is being given to whether the Valkyrie could enter top-flight endurance racing under the ‘GT1’ style regulations that are being proposed to replace the WEC’s LMP1 ruleset.

“I think it would be fantastic to see the Valkyrie racing at Le Mans against the Project One from Mercedes, Ferrari are rumored to be doing a hypercar and maybe Lamborghini,” Horner said.

“To see those marques going against each other would be fantastic if you could find a balance of power that works, it would be great to see these fantastic hypercars that are coming forward competing against each other.”

Amen to that.
