Chiko Roll car gearing up for its 30th Variety Bash

The annual Variety Bash attracts all kinds of interesting and unique metal, but John Lindsell still knows how to stand out from the crowd. The giant Chiko Roll on the roof of his car probably helps.

Lindsell is gearing up to take his 1964 Wolseley 2480 and its tasty roof ornament on its 30th Variety Bash this year, driving from Bonnyrigg to Alice Springs in support of the charity, which provides wheelchairs, mobility equipment, scholarships and learning aids to disadvantaged children.

"Doing all 30 events in the same car with the same company support is something special. I never dreamed this time would come. But it’s great” said Lindsell. “We started in 1989, and then did another five, 10, 20, and now 30.  It’s crept up on me.”

John will take on the trek with his son, Stephen, and granddaughter, Kiri. They'll be faced with dirt roads, river crossings and rough tracks along the way, stopping at regional towns along the way to help deliver donations to local schools.

The 2018 Variety Bash kicks off in Bonnyrigg, New South Wales on August 12 and rolls through Bathurst, before heading north towards Braitling in Alice Springs on August 21.

“The Variety Bash can only help Aussie kids overcome barriers to reach their full potential because of big hearted guys like John Lindsell who will make a lasting difference to kids who face all sorts of challenges such as isolation, financial hardship, disability and sickness in life,” said Variety NSW motoring events manager, Stuart Telfer.

“We salute John and thank him for his dedication to helping Aussie kids get a fair go in life.”
