Mini first to market with standard wireless CarPlay

But there's a catch – it's a three-year subscription, with renewal pricing to be determined.

Mini Australia has become the first manufacturer to offer wireless Apple CarPlay as standard in Australia, with the launch of the updated 2018 'LCI' Hatch and Convertible ranges.

Fitted from the base Cooper grade, the Mini Connected Services package includes various wireless and connected functions for the vehicle's infotainment system, including integration for wireless Apple CarPlay – which debuted over at parent company BMW, though it remains a cost option on all cars equipped with iDrive 6.

There is, however, a slight catch. The Connected Services are part of a three-year subscription package, meaning you'll have to renew them for an extra cost after the first three years of ownership. It's worth noting that the Emergency Call and Mini Teleservices functions "have a lifetime duration".

Pricing for the renewal isn't confirmed at this stage – we'll update when that information becomes available.

Daniel Silverwood, product planning manager for Mini Australia, said the company is in the process of working out renewal pricing based on customer feedback at this stage.

"The subscription period durations and pricing for the service renewals are still to be determined," he said.

"Mini will work closely with its customers to ensure the most relevant renewal services are available and flexible options are available."

Meanwhile, Adam Davis, product communications manager for BMW Group Australia, said the standard fitment of wireless Apple CarPlay across the Mini Hatch and Convertible ranges gives the brand a unique selling point.

"Given the ever-evolving role of in-car connectivity – particularly in this segment – MINI has introduced wireless Apple CarPlay as standard across the updated MINI Hatch and Convertible range," he said.

"We believe this is the first such offering within this segment, and it gives the new MINI another point of difference."

The 2018 Mini Hatch and Convertible range is on sale now, priced from $29,900 for the entry-level Cooper Hatch.
