Small SUVs the fastest growing segment in 2018
Little crossovers are finding more and more buyers, with the segment now sitting at around 12 per cent market share.
Small SUV sales have bounced back after a quiet 2017. This segment of jacked-up hatchbacks was the fastest-growing across the market to the end of June, up 30.4 per cent.
Small SUVs own 11.9 per cent market share, equating to 72,269 sales across 24 brands competing for audience attention and money. These vehicles are now the fourth most-popular in Australia behind pickups/utes, medium SUVs and small hatchbacks/sedans.
The market is divided into two segments by industry database VFACTS, loosely those cars that are generally priced below $40,000, and those generally priced above. More colloquially, you can split them into ‘mainstream’ and ‘premium’.
The star is Mitsubishi, with its bargain-basement ASX that’s huge among fleets, and the more emotive Eclipse Cross spinoff, owning combined market share of 20.5 per cent.
Other superstars with double-digit market share include Mazda CX-3, Subaru XV, Nissan Qashqai and Honda HR-V. Impressively, these models just keep on booming even as new competitors launch, such as the big-selling Hyundai Kona and Toyota C-HR.
At the premium end it’s the Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1 owning almost half the segment between them, though new contenders such as the Audi Q2, BMW X2, Jaguar E-Pace and Volvo XC40 are all luring buyers.
